Why Vacuum Blending?

Three things oxygen does in a blender

A normal blender doesn't just mix your ingredients with each other. It mixes them with the room.

Foam

It gets whipped in

Blades spinning in open air fold bubbles into every ounce, and they keep folding for as long as the motor runs. That's what foam is. Remove the air first and there's nothing left to whip.

Browning

It feeds the browning enzyme

Cut produce browns because an enzyme reacts with oxygen. The reaction needs both. With most of the oxygen gone it slows down a lot, and twenty minutes later you can see the difference.

Separation

Its bubbles pull blends apart

Bubbles rise and drag pulp with them. Blend without them and the texture holds together far longer. Every smoothie separates eventually. In our twenty-minute comparison the vacuum-blended glass had not started to.

Why it works

All three trace back to the same thing. Foam is air folded into the drink. Browning is an enzyme reacting with oxygen. Separation starts when bubbles rise and carry pulp up with them. Take the air out first and all three have much less to work with.

The twenty-minute test

You can see the chemistry

We put the same ingredients into two VOID blenders and ran one with the vacuum on and the other with it off. These photos were taken 20 minutes after pouring.

Two glasses of carrot smoothie twenty minutes after blending. The air-blended glass on the left has separated into a pale foam cap over settled pulp. The VOID glass on the right is one uniform color.

Celery juice

Celery that's still green twenty minutes later

Celery turns dull and yellow quickly once it has been whipped full of air. Both glasses came from the same batch of stalks, one blended with the vacuum on and one with it off, and were photographed twenty minutes after pouring.

Two glasses of celery juice side by side. The air-blended glass on the left has shifted yellow-green; the VOID glass on the right holds a deeper green.

Questions people ask about vacuum blending

What is the point of a vacuum blender?

A normal blender folds room air into everything it blends. A vacuum blender takes most of the air out of the sealed jar before the blades turn, so far less gets whipped in. You see it in the glass: less foam on top, color that browns more slowly, and a drink that holds together instead of separating.

How is a vacuum blender different from a regular blender?

It blends the same way. The difference is a pump that pulls the air out of the jar first, and a seal that holds while the motor runs. With VOID the pump is inside a cordless lid, so it can go on the Blendtec or classic Vitamix you already own instead of replacing it.

Is vacuum blending worth it?

It depends on what bothers you. If foam, browning or separation is why smoothies go unfinished, those are the three things it changes. In a 2019 test of four vacuum blenders, Consumer Reports found that vacuum mode “made smoothies that were smoother, less foamy, and more consistent in texture.” They didn’t test nutrition claims, and neither do we.

What is the best vacuum blender?

Usually the one that fits what you already own. If you have a Blendtec or a classic Vitamix with a grooved rubber pad, a VOID lid or Retrofit Kit adds vacuum blending without a second machine. If you’re starting with no blender, compare the Complete System with whole vacuum blenders on price, warranty and how the pump is powered. The setup guide walks through it.

Which VOID fits the blender you own?

Pick what you own and we'll tell you which one to order. Sometimes we ask one more question first.

What blender do you have?
Lift the jar off and look at the top of the base.
Where are you ordering from?

Pick one of the options above and the answer appears here.

The lid fits your Blendtec.

It goes straight onto a jar you already have, so there's nothing else to buy.

WildSide+, WildSide and Fourside jars all work, and so does the Professional 800 with its sound enclosure in place. If you'd rather have the whole thing, we make the blender too. That's the Complete System.

The lid won't fit those jars, but the Complete System will.

The lid seals against Blendtec and VOID jars, so it doesn't fit a Ninja or a KitchenAid. The Complete System is our own blender with the lid included, so there's nothing to match.

Send us a photo and we'll check.

Email us a picture of your blender and we'll tell you whether the lid fits it before you order anything.

If you'd rather not wait, the Complete System is our own blender with the lid included, and it works in any kitchen.

The Retrofit Kit fits your base.

It comes with a VOID jar that fits the base you already own.

That covers the 5000, Super 5000, 5200, 5300, 6300, 6500, 7500, 780, Pro 300, Pro 750, CIA, TurboBlend, and the Explorian E310, E320 and E520. Some bases need a small trim to the VOID adapter gasket before it seals. Trimming it doesn't affect your VOID warranty. If you'd rather have the whole thing, we make the blender too. That's the Complete System.

Those bases need the Complete System.

A smooth top with no rubber pad is a Self-Detect base, and the Retrofit Kit doesn't fit it. The Complete System is our own blender with the VOID lid included. You can keep your Vitamix for hot soups and nut butters and use the VOID for smoothies, which is where you'll notice the vacuum most.

This covers the Ascent A2300, A2500, A3300 and A3500, and the Venturist.

Send us a photo of the base and we'll tell you.

Email us a picture looking down at the top of the base, where the jar sits. We'll tell you which one you need before you order anything.

A grooved black rubber pad takes the Retrofit Kit. A smooth top with no pad, which is the Ascent or the Venturist, takes the Complete System.

We don't ship outside the United States from this site.

The lid and the Retrofit Kit fit the same blenders wherever you are, and the lid charges from any USB port, so voltage isn't the issue. Delivery is. Email us your country and your blender and we'll tell you the current options.

Orders shipped outside the United States can't be returned, though the warranty still applies and we'll repair it.

Ordering from outside the US

Buy from LUBA, our European distributor.

LUBA GmbH in Germany sells the lid and a compatible jar under the Madalga name, on their own delivery and returns terms, and ships across Europe.

The lid is the same one we make here and the fit is the same: Blendtec jars take the lid on its own, classic Vitamix bases take the VM2 jar. LUBA doesn't list the Complete System.

How to order in Europe

There's a version for every kitchen.

Choose what you have above. If your machine isn't on the list, the Complete System is our own blender with the lid included.
